What these series are

The FR6Q, F20 and F22 are Muncie's clutch shift PTOs for the Ford TorqShift automatics, shifted by a 12 volt solenoid with a pre-configured wiring harness. What sets them apart is the noise design. In the FR6Q the input gear sits on a spring-loaded rocker that pivots on the idler shaft and controls backlash, so the assembly adjusts itself and removes most gear rattle. Muncie says the F20 and F22 carry the same rattle abatement.

Muncie lists dump, fire and rescue, refuse, snow and ice, tow and recovery, and utility as target markets. All three work with Muncie Start, a module that softens torque spikes on high inertia loads.

Where it fits

  • FR6Q: Ford Super Duty trucks, F-350 to F-750, with the 6R140, on 4x2 and 4x4 chassis. Muncie's brochure rates it for F-650 and F-750 and says it may also be used on older F-350 to F-550 trucks.
  • F20: a 10-bolt unit for the 10R140 TorqShift 10-speed on Class 3 to 5 Ford trucks from model year 2020. It uses the transmission's full 300 lb ft capacity.
  • F22: an 8-bolt unit for the 10R140 on F-650 and F-750 diesels from model year 2023, standard on those trucks from 2024.

On the FR6Q, H and K series pumps and the B, Q and T outputs are for 4x2 chassis only, W series pumps are for the F-650 to F-750, and driveline output is not recommended on 4x4. For a 4x4 TorqShift Muncie says to order the PF4 pump with the 16QSRL code.

Reading the model number

An FR6Q tag reads series, gear, ratio, shift, arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is FR6Q-F12 09-D 3 Q X: F12 is the Ford 6R140 gear, 09 is 0.90:1, shift D, arrangement 3 (left side shaft low), output Q.

  • FR6Q shift: 6 or F for 2016 and later F-650 to F-750 and 2017 and later F-250 to F-550 (diesel or gas); D for 2016 and earlier F-250 to F-550 diesel; G for 2015 and earlier F-650 to F-750 gas.
  • FR6Q output: B 1 1/4 inch keyed, N 3/4 inch 11T MPP "N" mount, Q SAE "B" 7/8 inch 13T with SAE "A" 2-bolt, T 3/4 inch 11T SAE "A" 2-bolt.
  • FR6Q special feature: X none, B stationary and mobile, 6 Muncie Start, 7 Muncie Start stationary and mobile.

The F20 and F22 read the same way, for example F20-F13 12 GX 5 TN PX: F13 is the 10R140 gear, 12 is 1.18:1, GX is gas standard (DX diesel, S for Muncie Start, R reduced harness), 5 is no offset, TN is the 3/4 inch MPP "N" mount, and PX is single mode (PB is dual mode, stationary and mobile). The F22 shift codes are DX, DS, RX and RS.

Parts that wear and what to order

  • Gasket and rebuild kits: FR6Q-GSK and FR6Q-RBK, F20GSK and F20RBK. The FR6Q rebuild kit holds the clutch discs, wave spacer discs, bearings and rocker springs.
  • Rear cover and solenoid valve: the FR6Q book splits these part numbers by build date around 2/21/2025, so have the build date ready.
  • Installation kits by mode: F22 single mode kit 48TK6670 and dual mode kit 48TK6671, and F20 Bolt Kit 20TK6546.
  • Shift option kits, wiring harnesses and pressure switch relocation parts by shift code, listed in the FR6Q book.

Questions we get about these series

Is the FR6Q the same as the FR66?

They are separate series with their own model number charts and parts books, and Muncie lists them separately, so match the model number on the tag. See the FR66 page.

How do I tell an F20 from an F22?

By the opening. The F20 has a 10-bolt pattern, the F22 an 8-bolt pattern, and both patterns are specific to the 10R140.
