Muncie 82 Series PTO parts
The 82 is Muncie's heavy duty 8-bolt PTO for high volume pumps and blowers. Here is how its two parts books work and how to read the tag before you order.

What the 82 is
The 82 Series is Muncie's top duty gear shift PTO for the 8-bolt opening. It has a cast iron housing, a lever or air shift, and a choice of single or dual hydraulic pump mounts. Muncie lists dump and tow and recovery as its target markets, and rates it to drive high volume pumps and high CFM blowers.
The air shift is double acting, so air moves the shift fork both into and out of gear. The direct mount pump flanges can be rotated to give the pump clearance, and two companion flange outputs are available for remote pump and driveline drives.
Where it fits
The 82 mounts on an SAE 8-bolt opening. Muncie's input gear list covers Eaton (E70, E80), Fuller (F11, F68), Mack (M65), Tremec or Spicer (S70) and universal gears (U57, U62, U68). The 8F mounting is the non-standard pattern for the Eaton Endurant E70 and E80. Muncie publishes 82 instructions for Eaton Endurant and PACCAR transmissions, including the TX1, and for fitting the Eaton Fuller UltraShift.
On the Detroit DT12, Muncie's DT12 sheet shows the 828S-U68 as a bottom mount PTO rated 500 lb ft and 95 hp. It needs an adapter gear: 40TA6479 for the DT12-OHE and DT12-OV, and 40TA6480 for the DT12-OVX.
Reading an 82 model number
An 82 tag reads: series, mounting, input gear, speed ratio, shift type, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is 82 8S-U68-05 L-1-C-X: an 82 on an SAE 8-bolt standard mount, universal U68 gear, ratio 05, lever shift, arrangement 1, a 1410 companion flange output and no special features.
- Shift: L lever, M constant mesh, R double acting manual air, S 12 volt double acting electric over air, T air shift without the activation kit.
- Arrangement: 1 to 4 are standard housings and 5 to 8 are tall housings. Each set covers right or left side shaft low, with and without the gear to the rear.
- Special feature: P pressure lube, G greaseable shaft (EG, PG and ZG outputs only), 8 greaseable shaft plus pressure lube, X none.

Questions we get about the 82
Which 82 parts book do I use?
Muncie publishes two. SP18-03 covers units built after November 2017 or with the R, S or T dual air shift. SP83-03 covers units built before November 2017. SP18-03 also has a table that converts the older air shift codes B, D, G, P, Q, V and 5 to R, S or T.
What is different about the 19 ratio?
The 19 ratio unit engages differently: the output gear meshes directly with the input gear, so the shift fork is flipped 180 degrees. Muncie also notes the 19 ratio cannot be sold in kit form.
Can I add my own lever shift?
Muncie supplies the PTO with an eye bolt and expects the installer to build the linkage. It has a detent to locate the positions but does not lock in them, so the linkage needs its own neutral detent.
