Muncie SSH2 and SSV2 split shaft PTO parts

The SSH2 and SSV2 are Muncie's heavy duty split shafts, for jobs that need more outputs than the transmission can supply. Here is how the parts list is arranged and how to read the tag.

What the SSH2 and SSV2 are

These are the big split shaft units. Like the lighter SS66 and SS88, they sit in the driveline between the transmission and the rear axle, take the driveshaft as their input and feed auxiliary outputs. The difference is the load: the through shaft is rated for 14,400 lb ft (the 14 units) or 21,600 lb ft (the 21 units), and each output can be shifted by its own air cylinder.

The SSH2 is the horizontal case, with up to four outputs, two to the front and two to the rear. The SSV is the vertical case with two outputs, one forward and one rear. The SSV2 adds two auxiliary outputs for a lube pump or light pump. Outputs run in stationary or mobile work, and the drive to the rear axle is controlled separately from the PTO outputs.

Where it fits

Like any split shaft, these are chosen by through torque and companion flange, not by transmission make. Main shaft flanges are the 1550, 1610, 1710 and 1810 series, with 1410 or 1500 series companion flanges and SAE B, B-B, C, C-C and D hydraulic mounts available on the outputs. Muncie's literature points to jobs where the transmission's own PTO openings cannot supply enough power, such as pumps and prop shaft drives. For the lighter two-opening units, see the SS66 and SS88 page.

Reading an SSH2 or SSV model number

Muncie's example is SSH2-14X5-A XXXXX. In order, the tag shows:

  • SS and H2, V2 or V4: split shaft, then the case and output ratio. H2 and V2 are 1.28:1, V4 is 1.56:1.
  • 14 or 21: through torque, 14,400 or 21,600 lb ft.
  • X5 or XC: main shaft flange. X5 covers 1550, 1610, 1710 and 1810 and goes on the 14 only. XC covers 1610, 1710 and 1810 and goes on the 21 only.
  • A or E: manual air or electric over air, for the main shaft and the outputs.
  • A special feature code, then one code per output: X means the opening is covered. The other letters are C for a 1410 companion flange, D for 1550, E for SAE C hydraulic mount, K for SAE B, P for SAE B-B and I for DIN 5462. The SSV adds H for SAE D and L for the lube pump on the SSV2.

Parts that wear and what to order

  • Parts List and Description: gears, shafts, bearings and seals for the case, with the exploded views beside it.
  • Activation kits for the A and E options: 48TK4428 and 48TK5268A in the store list.
  • Output air shift system: the output cylinder parts, with activation kit 48TK4431.
  • Mounting kits: 2991010000 for the SSH and 2991070000 for the SSV, two per split shaft.
  • SSV2 lube pump and oil cooling kit: Muncie lists a lube pump for the SSV2, which raises the allowed output speed from 2,500 to 3,700 RPM.
  • Gaskets, plugs and drain hardware: see Other Parts Shown in This Manual.

Questions we get about the SSH2 and SSV2

What oil does a split shaft take and how often?

Muncie specifies SAE 90 EP gearbox oil. Check the level every two weeks of vehicle operation and change it every 2,000 working hours. The horizontal unit holds about 2.6 quarts and the vertical about 4.75, or 2.1 with the oil cooling kit.

Can I shift the outputs while the truck is moving?

Muncie states the vehicle must be stationary when shifting the main shaft or an output into or out of gear. Once engaged, the outputs can run with the vehicle in motion. See the installation guide.

How heavy a pump can I direct mount?

Muncie gives a moment limit rather than a weight: pump weight times the distance from the mounting pad to its center of gravity must not exceed 37 ft lb. Heavier setups need a support bracket.
