Muncie MD1 Titan Series PTO parts
The MD1 is Muncie's medium-duty, 10-bolt constant drive PTO for the Allison 3000 and 4000. Here is how to read the tag, which kit goes with which ratio and what the parts list covers.

What the MD1 is
The MD1 is the second PTO in Muncie's Titan class, a medium-duty constant drive unit for the 10-bolt opening on Allison transmissions. Constant drive means it cannot be shifted in and out: the output shaft turns whenever the transmission's PTO gear turns. Muncie positions it as a replacement for a front, crankshaft-driven hydraulic pump, with tapered roller bearings that are lubricated under pressure and a larger input shaft than earlier designs.
Other brochure features: three assembly arrangements, a pump flange that turns in 30-degree steps, a rear bearing cover that rotates 360 degrees for hose routing, and a single torque rating. Muncie also states that every option the older CD10 offered is available on the MD1.
Where it fits
The model number carries transmission code A10, which Muncie defines as the Allison 3000 and 4000 series. The brochure says the MD1 works with Muncie's EX Drive shaft extension; see PTO shaft extensions and EX Drive. The older constant drive unit is on the CD05 and CD10 page.
Intermittent ratings at 1,000 rpm:
| Ratio | Output speed | Torque lb ft | Horsepower |
|---|---|---|---|
| 05 | .54:1 | 400 | 77 |
| 06 | .63:1 | 400 | 77 |
| 07 | .73:1 | 415 | 79 |
| 08 | .84:1 | 360 | 69 |
| 10 | .97:1 | 310 | 59 |
| 12 | 1.19:1 | 265 | 50 |
| 15 | 1.48:1 | 205 | 39 |
Ratios 09 (.90:1) and 11 are also built.
Reading an MD1 model number
The tag reads: model, transmission gear, ratio, shift type, assembly arrangement, output type, special feature. Muncie's example is MD1-A10 07-MX 3 BB PX: an MD1 for the Allison 3000 and 4000, ratio 07 (.73:1), MX constant mesh, arrangement 3 (left side shaft low), output BB (SAE B 7/8 inch 13 tooth spline, 2- and 4-bolt SAE B flange) and PX, the standard hose kit.
- Arrangement: 1 is right side shaft low, 3 is left side shaft low, 5 is straight out from the opening.
- Output: 1X is a 1 1/4 inch round keyed shaft; BA, BB and BS are SAE B splines; CB and CC are SAE C; PB and PS are SAE BB 1 inch 15 tooth; AA is SAE A; X2 and X4 are 1 1/2 inch 10 tooth shafts for DIN and 1410 companion flanges.
- Special feature: PX standard hose kit, BX top opening cover and hose kit, UX pulse generator, XX hose delete, PW and BW wet spline.
The model number guide covers Muncie tags across all series.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Rebuild kits by ratio: MD1-RBK-05 for ratios 05 and 06, MD1-RBK-07 for ratios 07 to 15. The input bearing differs between the two groups.
- Gasket kit MD1-GSK and stud kit 20TK6353 whenever the PTO comes off the transmission.
- Input gear assembly (Detail D): one gear per ratio, plus idler shaft, input bearings and Belleville washers.
- Output shaft and output cover (Details A and E): a shaft part number per output and arrangement, and the output flanges including the 1410 and DIN companion flanges.
- Housing, bearing and shims (Detail B): shaft end play must be set to 0.001 to 0.005 inch with the shim kit.
- Activation and hose kits: 43TK6458 (28 inch hose) and 43TK6470 (57 inch hose).
Questions we get about the MD1
Does the MD1 shift in and out?
No. The shift type on the tag is MX, constant mesh, so the shaft turns whenever the transmission's PTO gear does.
Which rebuild kit do I need?
Read the ratio code on the tag. Ratios 05 and 06 take MD1-RBK-05; 07 through 15 take MD1-RBK-07. Send us the full tag if you are unsure.
Why are there so many output covers?
Each output type has its own shaft and cover in the parts list, and the wet spline versions have their own covers. The output code in the model number tells you which one you have.
