What these three are

The RG and RL are Muncie's Reversible G and Reversible L Series PTOs, and both parts lists include a reverse idler gear. The RG is a 6-bolt unit with a single ratio. The RL comes in a 6-bolt or 8-bolt mounting, and its 03 ratio is built with a low box gear reduction. The 83 is an 8-bolt PTO with a lever shift and a choice of three ratios.

Muncie rates the RG at 26 hp and 140 lb ft intermittent, and the RL at 38 hp and 200 lb ft. The 83 is rated at 95 hp and 500 lb ft in the 05 and 06 ratios and 71 hp and 375 lb ft in the 12 ratio. All three list a maximum speed of 2,500 rpm in Muncie's torque table.

Where it fits

All three take interchangeable input gears. The RG list is the longest, with Clark, Fuller, GMC, I.H.C. (H65), New Process, New Venture, Spicer, Tremec (T82), universal, Warner and Zed F codes. The RL gears are C57, C61, F61, F63, M65, S60, S70, U57 and U68. The 83 uses M65, S70, U57, U62 and U68.

Muncie's owner's manual lists indicator wiring kits for the RG, RL, 82 and 83 on Eaton Fuller CEEMAT automatics. It also says lever shift is offered only on the RG, RL, 82 and 83, and that the installer supplies the linkage.

Reading the model numbers

Each tag reads: series, mounting, input gear, ratio, shift, arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's three examples:

• RG 6D-U68 13-L 3 B X: RG on a 6-bolt non-standard mount, U68 gear, ratio 13, lever shift, arrangement 3, 1 1/4 inch round output. Shift codes are L lever, A manual air and C cable.
• RL 6D-U68 05-L 3 B X: the same layout. Mounting is 6D (6-bolt) or 8S (8-bolt), shift is A or L, arrangement 2 or 3.
• 83 8S-U68 05-L 2 C X: 8-bolt standard mount (8B for metric studs), ratio 05, lever shift, arrangement 2, and output C (1 1/2 inch, 10 spline, 1410 flange) or 2 (DIN). Special feature P adds pressure lube.

Parts that wear and what to order

• Input gears by transmission code, from the input gear table in the RG and RL books or the 83 parts list.
• Reverse gears and output gears on the RG and RL, with the low box assembly on the RL.
• Air shift cylinders and kits, listed as the RG and RL air shift cylinder sections, with lever to air conversion kits.
• Gasket kits for all three, plus rebuild kits for the RG (cable, air and lever shift) and the 83.
• Mounting kits and dash light kits, including the 83 pressure lube kit.

Which parts book do I need?

One for each series. Pick the RG, RL or 83 book by the first letters of the model number. All three are linked below.

Does the 83 06 ratio need anything extra?

Yes. Muncie's 83 manual says the 06 ratio requires 0.190 inch of additional spacing and a longer stud kit than the standard kit supplies.

Can I put a cable or lever on any of these?

Only as the tag allows: the RG takes lever, air or cable, the RL lever or air, and the 83 lever only. On an RG with a cable, Muncie's owner's manual says to set a neutral detent position instead of pushing the control all the way in.
