What the TG is
The TG Series is Muncie's general purpose gear shift power take-off. It bolts to a standard SAE 6-bolt or 8-bolt PTO opening, takes its drive from the transmission's PTO gear through a constant mesh input gear, and is shifted in and out by a cable, by truck air, or electrically with the Lectra Shift or E-Hydra Shift options. Muncie built the housing in die-cast aluminum to keep weight and noise down, and the design is modular, which is why so many TG parts are sold as kits by option code.
The spec brochure lists dump, refuse, tow and recovery and utility trucks as the TG's target markets, so a TG is typically running a dump pump, a wrecker's hydraulics or a utility body's equipment.
Where it fits
The TG is built with interchangeable input gears for most popular transmissions. Muncie's input gear list covers Allison (A69), Eaton (E70, E80), Fuller (F63, F66, F70), Mack (M65), Tremec or Spicer (S71) and universal gears (S68, U60, U68). Muncie also publishes TG installation instructions for the Eaton Endurant and PACCAR transmissions, the Detroit DT12 bottom opening, Eaton Fuller UltraShift, the GM pickup with Allison 1000, and Aisin automatics, all listed in the manuals below.
Reading a TG model number
A TG tag reads in this order: series, mounting, input gear, speed ratio, then shift option, assembly arrangement, output and special feature. Muncie's own example is TG-6S-U60-04 C-1-B-X: a TG on an SAE 6-bolt standard mounting with a U60 universal input gear, ratio code 04, cable shift, right side shaft low, a 1 1/4 inch round keyed output shaft and no special features. The model number guide lists every TG code.
The shift letter matters most when you order shift parts. A, P and 4 are manual air covers, E and 5 are electric over air, C and Z are cable covers, and the Lectra Shift and E-Hydra Shift covers have their own sections in the parts list.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Mounting gasket packs and studs whenever the PTO comes off; the gaskets set the backlash. The parts list has separate Mounting Kits and Gasket Packs sections.
- Shift cover parts by option: the air cover, cable cover, Lectra Shift and E-Hydra Shift sections each list the cover assembly and its pistons, forks, springs and seals.
- Gear sets by ratio code from the Gear Set Selection Chart, if the teeth are pitted or chipped.
- Output shaft, bearings and seal, plus the shaft and flange kits when converting between a keyed shaft and a direct mount pump flange.
- Activation kits for the air, electric over air and E-Hydra systems, including the PACCAR and Eaton kits.
Questions we get about the TG
What is the difference between a TG6 and a TG8?
The digit is the mounting: 6 for an SAE 6-bolt opening and 8 for an SAE 8-bolt opening. The store lists them as separate TG6 and TG8 categories.
My TG whines after a gear change. What should I check first?
Backlash. A whine usually means the PTO is mounted too tight; Muncie's target is 0.006 to 0.012 inch, set with the mounting gaskets. See PTO troubleshooting.
Can I change the ratio without replacing the whole PTO?
The TG brochure describes the speed ratio as easy to change, and the parts list sells the gear sets by ratio code. Send us the full model number and the ratio you want, and we will tell you which gears and gaskets that takes.
