What the CD40 is

The CD40 is a constant drive PTO, so it has no clutch and no shifter and turns whenever the transmission's PTO gear turns. Muncie built it for maximum output torque on live engine driven equipment, and its older brochure names refuse bodies and cement mixers. It shares the gear and housing designs of the CS41 clutch shift PTO, and Muncie says to choose the CD40 when maximum power is needed and the PTO never has to disengage.

Muncie lists precision ground gears, extra large bearings, rotatable direct mount flanges, an SAE "C" direct mount option and standard pressure lubrication. Two assembly arrangements let the PTO mount shaft high or low on either side of the transmission.

Where it fits

The CD40 is a 10-bolt PTO for the Allison World and Caterpillar automatic transmissions; Muncie's older CS and CD brochure names the Allison 3000 and 4000 and the Caterpillar CX. The parts book's input gear table includes A10 (Allison 10.16P right hand), U60 and C95 gears.

The current spec brochure shows a single ratio, 07 (0.74:1), at 600 lb ft. The older brochure described a 490 to 600 lb ft range and two ratios, and the older parts book lists 07, 10 (1.00:1) and 12 (1.20:1), so an older unit may carry one of those.

Reading a CD40 model number

The order is PTO type, mounting, transmission gear, speed ratio, shift type, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's printed example is CD-40-A10-07 M-3-C-X: constant drive, 10-bolt design 4, Allison A10 gear, ratio 07, constant mesh, left side shaft low, 1410 companion flange output, no special feature.

• Arrangement: 1 is right side shaft low, 3 is left side shaft low.
• Output (current brochure): E SAE "C" 1 1/4 inch 14T shaft with SAE "C" 2 and 4 bolt flange, Y the same shaft with an SAE "C" 2-bolt flange, Z the same shaft with an SAE "B" 2 and 4 bolt flange.
• Output (older parts book): also C for the 1410 companion flange and 2 for a DIN companion flange.
• Special feature: X none, B hose kit for top opening (a 48 inch lube hose in the older book), 3 a 17 inch spline hose kit.

Parts that wear and what to order

• Input gear sub-assembly from Table A, which includes the gear, cone bearings, bearing cups and cone spacer. It is sold as one unit.
• Cone spacer and bearing shim from Tables B and C. Only one of each is used, and shim kit 18TK4832 holds one of every size.
• Output shaft and ratio gear, sold as an assembly by output letter and ratio, plus the E, Y or Z hydraulic flange.
• Gasket and rebuild kits: CD40-GSK and CD40-RBK. Installation kit 48TK4891 includes the stud kit, gasket kit, label kit and lube kit.
• Hose kits: 43TK3881 standard and 43TK3885 for the Top R.S. HD Series, and pressure lube kits 43MK2810 and 43MK3620.

What is the difference between the CD40 and the CS41?

The CS41 is the shiftable clutch version built on the same gear and housing designs. The CD40 is constant mesh. See the CS40 and CS41 page if the PTO has to disengage.

Which pump mounts fit the CD40?

The current outputs are SAE "C" types: E, Y and Z. Older units may have a C (1410 companion flange) or 2 (DIN companion flange) output.

Is my older CD40 ratio still listed?
