Muncie CS40 and CS41 PTO parts
The CS40 and CS41 are Muncie's highest torque clutch shift PTOs for the Allison 3000 and 4000, used on fire pump and other heavy equipment. Here is how to match parts to your build date and read the tag.

What the CS40 and CS41 are
The CS40 and CS41 are Muncie's top clutch shift power take-offs, built with wide, precision ground gears and oversized bearings for the highest output torque Muncie offers on an Allison. The CS40 has the solenoid built onto the PTO; the CS41 moves it to a remote valve for clearance around chassis parts. Pressure lubrication is standard, the direct mount pump flanges rotate, and two assembly arrangements put the shaft high or low on either side of the transmission.
Muncie says the CS40 and CS41 are rated up to 4,000 rpm for fire pump applications; for other uses its owner's manual asks you to contact Muncie before going above 2,500 rpm output speed. An electronically controlled Muncie Start option softens engagement for high inertia loads. The constant drive sibling is on the CD40 page.
Where it fits
Muncie lists the CS40 and CS41 for the Allison 3000 and 4000 series, 10-bolt opening, with transmission code A10. Muncie's CS40/41 installation sheet (IN23-02) shows the opening location on each series, and mounting capscrews are torqued to 45 ft lb. Muncie's older CS41 flyer (MP05-03) says available torque can be limited by the Allison PTO gear and lists only the 07 ratio for the HD 4000 series because of internal interference at 10 and 12. Shaft extension kits are on the extensions page.
Reading a CS40 or CS41 model number
The tag reads: type, mounting, transmission and ratio, shifter, arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is CS41-A10 07-H 1 C X: clutch shift, remote solenoid (41), Allison, ratio 07 (.74:1), 12 volt shifter, arrangement 1, 1410 companion flange, no special feature.
- Mounting: 40 is the integrated solenoid, 41 the remote solenoid.
- Shifter: H is 12 volt electric hydraulic, J is 24 volt.
- Arrangement: 1 is right side shaft low, 3 is left side shaft low.
- Output: C 1410 companion flange, 2 DIN 100 companion flange, E SAE C 2 and 4 bolt, Y SAE C 2 bolt, Z SAE C shaft with SAE B flange, P SAE BB 2 and 4 bolt, I DIN 5462, V Muncie extended shaft (not included).
- Special feature: X none, B hose kit, U pulse generator, 3 17 inch hose kit, 6 Muncie Start.
The model number guide covers all series.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Build date first. Muncie has three parts books: before October 2013 (SP06-01), October 2013 to October 2019 (SP14-03) and after October 2019 (SP22-01). Parts differ between them.
- Input gear assembly (Table B) with its cone spacer (Table A) and shim (Table C). On units built before 10/13 the input and output gears must be bought as a set.
- Output ratio gear (07, 10, 12) and the clutch pack of 7 friction and 6 spacer discs. CS41-RBK is the rebuild kit and CS41-GSK the gasket kit; the rebuild kit has no input parts.
- Output shaft and cover or hydraulic flange by output letter.
- Solenoid and activation parts: standard solenoid 35T40860 (12 volt) or 35T40864 (24 volt), Muncie Start valve 35T62496, activation kits 48TK4894 and 48TK4893, hose kit 43TK4036, speed sensor kit 31TK3873 and bolt kit 20TK6353.
Questions we get about the CS40 and CS41
How do I know which parts book matches my PTO?
Find the date code on the unit. Muncie's lists split at October 2013 and October 2019, and the input gear tables are marked for date codes 10/13 and later.
What is the Muncie Start option?
Special feature 6. Muncie describes it as an electronically controlled, modulated clutch engagement that removes the torque spike at start-up on high inertia loads. It has its own solenoid valve and cover.
What is the difference between the CS40 and CS41?
Only the solenoid location. The CS41 uses a remote mounted valve, so it fits tighter spaces. See PTO troubleshooting if either will not engage.
