Muncie PTO shaft extensions and EX Drive
A shaft extension carries the PTO output back along the Allison transmission so a large pump can be direct mounted. Here is how the EX Drive family is numbered and what to check before ordering.

What the shaft extension and EX Drive are
A shaft extension bolts to the PTO and carries the output back along an Allison 3000 or 4000 transmission, so a large gear or piston pump can be direct mounted at the rear. Muncie says this removes the need for a driveline or a front engine drive.
The EX Drive is the current design. It is a wet spline unit with a three-piece shaft and a steel housing, available for clutch shift and constant drive PTOs, in SAE B, BB and C outputs and DIN 5462. Muncie's older shaft extension kits for CD10, CS10, CS20 and CS41 PTOs cover installs without a retarder or rear mounted cooler.
Where it fits
The EX Drive is built for the Allison 3000 and 4000 series, and the XSMC version also covers the 4700 without a retarder or cooler. Muncie sorts it by PTO:
- XSMC: the A20 and A30 families, and the MC1 in the Titan class. Muncie's product page also names the A40 and A50 families.
- XD10, XS10, XS24 and XS41: the CD10, CS10, CS24 and CS41 PTOs. Muncie notes the CD10 and CS24 versions are obsolete as complete assemblies, with limited service parts.

Reading an EX Drive model number
The tag reads: PTO code, transmission, arrangement, output shaft, mounting flange, transmission feature, special feature. Muncie's example is XSMC-A30XX-X3-C-C-X-X, and for the older families XD10-A30XX-X3-C-C-R-X.
- PTO code: XSMC, XD10, XS10, XS24 or XS41.
- Transmission: A30XX is Allison 3000, A40XX is 4000 and A47XX is 4700.
- Arrangement: X3 left side shaft low, X1 right side shaft low, X4 left shaft high, X2 right shaft high, X5 top side (Allison 4000 and 4700 only).
- Output shaft: B is SAE B, C is SAE C, P is SAE BB, I is DIN 5462.
- Mounting flange: B, C or I for SAE B, SAE C or DIN.
- Transmission feature: R is an integral retarder, C is a direct mount cooler, X is neither.
- Special feature: X is none, C is an output flange cover.
Muncie notes that shaft high is needed with an integral transmission oil cooler, while a retarder generally calls for shaft low.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Housings and output shafts by transmission, retarder or cooler version and SAE or DIN output, with output flanges and O-rings.
- Mounting bracket and clamp parts: SP16-02 lists transmission brackets by PTO, side and Allison model, and the Titan version has a replacement clamp kit MC1EXRBK.
- Installation kits by transmission, such as 48TK5528 (3000 with retarder) and 48TK5546 (4000 with retarder).
- Cooler lube kit 48TK6008, required on cooler applications so oil reaches the output splines.
- Cover kits: 16TK5504 (SAE C), 16TK5507 (SAE B or BB) and 16TK5508 (DIN 5462).
Questions we get about shaft extensions
Can I run the transmission without the pump on?
Not with the output shaft in place. The PTO and EX Drive are wet spline, so Muncie requires either the output shaft removed and a cover installed, or the pump system fitted, before the transmission runs.
How heavy a pump can an EX Drive carry?
An unsupported pump can weigh up to 110 lb. Muncie asks for a bracket above that weight, for pumps longer than 12 inches and for all multiple section pumps.
Which kit goes with my PTO?
