What the HS24 is
The HS24 is a clutch shift PTO made for places where a standard housing will not clear chassis parts. Muncie gave it a sculptured housing and a solenoid built directly onto the unit to save installation time. An oil-pressure clutch pack drives the output, and a Muncie drag brake stops the shaft turning while the PTO is off. Pressure lubrication is standard, and the direct mount pump flanges rotate for port clearance.
Muncie rates it at up to 325 lb ft. Only four speed ratios are listed, so check the table below before assuming a ratio from another 10-bolt PTO.
Where it fits
The HS24 mounts on the Allison 10-bolt pad, and the transmission code in the model number is A10. For Hino trucks, Muncie's installation manual covers a PTO for a Hino chassis with an Allison 3000 series transmission, built with special feature H and supplied with installation kit 48TK5589 (mounting kit, labels, hoses, activation kit and gaskets). The manual has separate right side and left side opening installation sections.
For a similar clutch shift PTO with more ratios, see the CS24 and CS25 page. Ratings at 1,000 rpm:
| Ratio | Output speed | Intermittent lb ft | Continuous lb ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06 | .56:1 | 325 | 228 |
| 07 | .70:1 | 305 | 214 |
| 09 | .87:1 | 290 | 203 |
| 12 | 1.15:1 | 250 | 175 |
Reading an HS24 model number
The tag reads: PTO type, mounting, transmission and ratio, shifter, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is HS-24-A10-07 H-3-K-X: a clutch shift HS, 10-bolt sculptured housing, Allison, ratio 07 (.70:1), 12 volt shifter, arrangement 3, SAE B 2 and 4 bolt output and no special feature.
- Shifter: H is 12 volt, J is 24 volt, P is less activation kit.
- Arrangement: 1 or 3.
- Output: B 1 1/4 inch round, C 1410 companion flange, 2 DIN 100 companion flange, K SAE B 2 and 4 bolt, P SAE BB 2 and 4 bolt, S SAE B 2 bolt, Q and T SAE A 2 bolt, 6 SAE B special.
- Special feature: X none, B hose kit, U pulse generator, 2 and 3 special 36 inch and 17 inch hose kits, H Hino installation kit.
The model number guide covers all series.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Input gear and cone spacer (Tables E and D) with the input bearing shim (Table F). The cone spacer is a critical dimension, so buy the gear assembly that includes it.
- Bell gear by ratio (Table A) and the clutch pack: 5 friction discs and 8 spacer discs on standard outputs. The HS24-RBK rebuild kit bundles them with seals and bearings.
- Output shaft (Table B) and output cover or flange (Table C) by output letter.
- Solenoid valve: 35T40860 (12 volt) or 35T40864 (24 volt).
- Installation kits: 48TK5217 (12 volt), 48TK5219 (24 volt), 48TK5235 (12 volt, 17 inch hose), and 48TK5589 for the Hino version. Also stud kit 20TK6353 and speed sensor kit 31TK3873 for option U.
Questions we get about the HS24
How is an HS24 different from a CS24?
The housing. The HS24 is shaped for limited clearance and comes in four ratios, where the CS24 has a wider ratio range. Both are clutch shift PTOs for the Allison 10-bolt pad.
Does a direct mounted pump need its own support?
Yes. Muncie does not supply a bracket, and its manual calls for one to support the pump and tie it to the transmission. Flange capscrews are torqued to 25 ft lb.
What does Muncie check if the HS24 will not engage?
Engage at idle, under 1,200 rpm at the output shaft, with 400 psi gauges at the PTO inlet and the pressure switch port. Under 150 psi, check the hoses and port; more than 50 psi difference points to the solenoid, orifice and fittings. See PTO troubleshooting.
