What the FR and FA series are

These are clutch shift PTOs. A wet clutch pack, applied by transmission pressure through a 12 volt solenoid, engages the PTO from a dash switch with the engine running. The FR Series was developed with Ford for the TorqShift automatic and has a left side opening. Muncie's flyer describes 4x2 and 4x4 versions for the F-250 through the F-550, with output speed at 126% of engine speed and a harness that ties into Ford's electronics for throttle control.

The FA Series is the earlier Ford design, installed on the Ford 4R100. The FA6B is a separate compact unit whose angled housing moves the shaft below chassis obstructions on Allison and Aisin 6-bolt transmissions.

Where it fits

The FA6B-I84 was designed for the left opening of the Isuzu NPR with the Aisin A460. For direct mount pumps on newer Fords, see the FR6Q, F20 and F22 page and the FR66 page.

Reading an FR or FA model number

An FR tag reads: series and mounting, input gear, ratio, shift option, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's printed FR67 example is FR67-F15 06-G 4 N X (the chart's gear list shows D15, so go by the tag). Useful codes:

• Mounting: 63 is 6-bolt for 4x2; 64 and 67 are 6-bolt for 4x2 or 4x4.
• Shift: H (2003 to 2004), D standard diesel (2005 to 2010), G standard gas (2005 to 2011), F gas (2008 to 2011, FR67), I for the LCF/CF chassis (2006 to 2009), Q and Z specials.
• Output: B 1 1/4 inch keyed, N 3/4 inch 11T spline, Q 7/8 inch 13T, R 5/8 inch 9T, T 3/4 inch 11T 2-bolt "A", W tandem pump.

The FR3C reads FR3C-F12 09-63BX: ratio 09, shift 6 (diesel wiring) or F (gasoline wiring), arrangement 3, output B. The FA follows the FR order (62 or 64, F14 gear, ratio 06, shift H or Z). The FA6B reads FA6B-I84 06-H3BX: I84 is the Aisin gear, A67 the Allison gear, H the 12 volt shift; outputs are B, Q, T or R.

Parts that wear and what to order

• Clutch pack and piston if the PTO slips under load: friction discs, reaction plates, springs. The older FR book lists gasket and rebuild kits for the FR63 and FR64.
• Output shaft and flange by output letter, from the Table A and Table B sections.
• Activation kits and harnesses by shift code, such as 43TK5170 (FR63 D and G), 43TK5171 (FR64 D and G), the FR3C Activation Kits section, and FA6B kits 43TK5282, 43TK5281 and 43TK5287.
• Installation and stud kits whenever the PTO comes off; the FR lists have Fr Series Stud Kits sections.
• Solenoid valve for no-engage faults: the FA list has a Valve Assembly for All FA Series section.

Questions we get about the FR and FA series

What is the difference between an FR63 and an FR64?

Mounting. The FR63 is for 4x2 chassis only; the FR64 and FR67 are built for 4x2 or 4x4.

Can I mount a pump straight onto an FR3C?

Not per Muncie's application sheet: it says the FR3C is not available for direct mount pump output and points to the FR6Q. The FR3C is the keyed shaft unit, and driveline output is not recommended on 4x4 chassis.
