Muncie SH Series PTO parts
The SH is Muncie's air shift power take-off for jobs that ask more than a TG can give. Here is how its parts list is organised and how to read the tag before you order.

What the SH is
The SH Series sits between the TG and the 82 in Muncie's line. It is an air shift only PTO with a cast iron housing, made for applications that need more torque than a TG delivers. The shift piston is inside the housing, so there is no exposed air cylinder on the outside of the PTO. The SH6 bolts to an SAE 6-bolt opening and the SH8 to an SAE 8-bolt opening.
Intermittent ratings run from 325 to 400 lb ft depending on ratio, and the torque table below shows each one. Muncie's rating for continuous duty at the 05 and 07 ratios is 280 lb ft.
Where it fits
The SH takes interchangeable input gears, so one housing covers many transmissions. The spec brochure lists Eaton and PACCAR (E80), Fuller (F10, F11, F61, F63, F66, F70), Mack (M65), Spicer (S60, S70, S71, S73) and universal gears (S68, U60, U68). The SH6 and SH8 parts book adds Fuller F84 and F86 gears, and Muncie also publishes a supplement for fitting SH, TG, CS6/CS8 and 82 PTOs to Eaton Fuller UltraShift transmissions. The TG Series is the lighter option for the same openings and the 82 Series the heavier one.
Reading an SH model number
An SH tag reads: series, mounting, input gear, speed ratio, shift type, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is SH-8S-U68-12 A-1-B-X: an SH on an SAE 8-bolt standard mount, universal U68 input gear, ratio 12 (1.15:1), manual air shift, arrangement 1, a 1 1/4 inch round keyed output shaft and no special features.
- Shift: A is manual air, E is 12 volt electric over air, F is 24 volt electric over air, M is constant mesh, and P is manual air without the installation kit.
- Output: B is a 1 1/4 inch keyed shaft, C a 1410 companion flange, K and P SAE B and BB pump flanges, E an SAE C pump flange, I DIN 5462, and 2 a DIN companion flange.
- Special feature: X none, P pressure lube, R pulse generator without pressure lube, S pulse generator with pressure lube.
The model number guide covers the other series.
Parts that wear and what to order
- Input gear sub-assembly from Table A of the parts list. It is sold only as a set with the gear, a measured cone spacer and the input bearings.
- Bearing shim and cone spacer from Tables B and C. The sub-assembly needs a Table B shim to install properly, and a shim kit is sold separately.
- Gasket kits and rebuild kits. The SH6 and SH8 each have one for the standard outputs and a second pair for outputs E, I and Z.
- Installation kits and stud kits. The parts list sorts them by SH6 and SH8, standard and metric studs.
- Air shift parts, including the piston, spring and O-rings inside the housing, listed in the main parts and description section.
Questions we get about the SH
How is an SH different from a TG?
The SH is air shift only and carries more torque. The TG ratings top out at 285 lb ft, while the SH reaches 400 lb ft. The TG also offers cable and other shift choices.
Why does the input gear need a shim?
The input gear is sold as a sub-assembly, and Muncie's parts book says it needs a Table B shim to be installed correctly. Send us the model number and we will help you pick the shim and spacer set.
Which manual covers installation?
The Muncie owner's manual IN84-03 covers the SH electric over air and standard air shift systems. It is in the manuals list below, along with the SP97-01 parts book.
