What the P58 and P60 are

Both are air shifted clutch pack PTOs with internally pressure lubricated bearings, built for the PACCAR TX-8 transmission. The P58 is the heavy unit, rated 420 lb ft at both intermittent and continuous duty. The P60 has an aluminum housing, is air shift only, and is rated 258 lb ft.

Both run at 121% of engine speed and take the same three outputs: an SAE B 2 and 4-bolt with a 7/8 inch 13-tooth spline, a DIN 5462 pump mount, or a 1310 companion flange. Muncie describes them as compatible with most common gear pumps, and its brochure lists the PH series (0.62 to 2.48 cubic inches per revolution), PK series (0.98 to 3.94) and S series hoist pumps (1.47 to 3.94).

Where it fits

The P58 and P60 are made for the PACCAR TX-8, and Muncie's Z11 input gear code names the TX-8 and the ZF PowerLine together. The P58 is designed to fit both the left and the right side openings. Muncie's activation sheet says the truck needs these PACCAR PTO prep codes: 4233510 (park brake interlock for a transmission mounted PTO) and 4233900 (dash mounted single acting electric over air control), plus either 4257110 for left side or 4257120 for right side PTO provisions. Activation is permitted only in stationary or crawl mode.

Reading a P58 or P60 model number

The tag reads: PTO type and input gear, speed ratio, shift type, assembly arrangement, output, special feature. Muncie's example is P58-Z11 10-XX 5 2I PX.

• P58 or P60: the series.
• Z11: the input gear, for the PACCAR TX-8 and ZF PowerLine.
• 10: speed ratio, 0.98:1.
• XX: electric over air without activation components.
• 5: assembly arrangement, no offset.
• BB, 2I or X3: output. BB is SAE B with a 7/8 inch 13-tooth shaft, 2I is DIN 5462 and X3 is a 1310 companion flange.
• PX or BX: PX is standard for a driver's side install, and BX adds a long hose kit for a passenger side install.

Parts that wear and what to order

We do not have a published parts breakdown for these two, so we work from the installation sheets and the brochure. Send us the full model number and we will match the parts.

• 1310 companion flange kit 197KFL78000, installed with a cap screw torqued to 60 ft lb.
• SAE B adapter 606X80A000, with nuts torqued to 40 ft lb.
• Indicator switch, air fitting and cover plugs. On a right side install the switch and air fitting move to the opposite side of the cover, per Muncie's plug supplement.
• Mounting and lube kits. Muncie's mounting instruction for the right opening lists mounting kit 199K1164000 and lube kit 195KLB628AP.
• Pump support brackets, required for any direct mount pump over 20 lb including hoses and fittings.

Questions we get about the P58 and P60

Can the same P58 go on either side of the transmission?

Yes, Muncie designed it for the left and right openings. The standard feature code PX is for a driver's side install. For the passenger side the code is BX, which adds a long hose kit, and Muncie's plug supplement shows moving the switch and air fitting to the opposite side of the cover.

What is the difference between the P58 and P60?

Torque, weight and housing. The P58 is rated 420 lb ft and weighs about 47 lb. The P60 is rated 258 lb ft, weighs about 33 lb and has an aluminum housing.

Can I run the PTO with the truck moving?
