Muncie CS12 PTO parts

What the CS12 is

The CS12 is a clutch shift PTO from Muncie Power Products. Inside, a bell gear carries a clutch pack made of friction discs and spacer discs, which a spring and a hydraulic piston clamp together when the PTO is engaged. A 12 volt or 24 volt solenoid controls the oil to that piston, so the PTO is switched from the cab and not by a lever or cable.

The only CS12 document in our library is the parts list SP01-01, a two page sheet dated 11-09. It has an exploded view with callouts for the C and 2, E, I, P and Y options, plus the numbered list of parts. The store carries the same list as an interactive page with a buy link on each part.

Where it fits

SP01-01 does not name a transmission, and we will not guess at one. Muncie lists the CS12 on the cover of its clutch shift installation and owner's manual for Allison World Transmissions (IN95-02), but that manual gives no CS12 specific fitment. Send us the model tag and the transmission it is mounted on, and we will confirm the match before you order.

What the book does tell you is how the unit is built: an input gear and input bearing, cone spacers and shims chosen as required, an idler shaft, a bell gear, the clutch hub and discs, and an output shaft with its bearing, seal and cover.

Identifying a CS12

Muncie did not print a model number chart in the CS12 sheet, so the parts list is read by the letters on your unit's tag.

• Ratio: the input gear and bell gear come as a pair by ratio code. Codes 05 to 08 and 10 are listed, with bell gears of 47, 45, 43, 40 and 38 teeth.
• Output option letter: C, 2 and X use a 1 1/2 inch 10 spline shaft; E, Y and Z use a 1 1/4 inch 14 spline shaft; I is a 36 mm 8 spline; P is 1 inch 15 spline. C and 2 take companion flanges (1410 style and DIN), and the hydraulic options E, I, P, Y and Z each have their own pump flange.
• Housing: a 1 arrangement or a 3 arrangement housing.
• Solenoid: 12 volt or 24 volt.

Parts that wear and what to order

• Clutch pack (Parts List and Description): 7 friction discs and 6 spacer discs, the spring, piston, piston cup and the O-rings around them.
• Input gear and bell gear by ratio code, with the thrust races, bearings and snap rings.
• Cone spacers and shims sold in graded sizes and chosen as required to set the bearing fit.
• Output shaft, output bearing and seal by option letter, plus the open bearing cover or hydraulic flange.
• Solenoid in 12 volt or 24 volt, and the orifice, hose, elbow and tee on the plumbing side.
• Installation kit 48TK3900 (12 volt), which Muncie lists as a shift kit, gasket pack, stud kit and standard hose kit together.

Questions we get about the CS12

Which solenoid do I need?

The list has a 12 volt and a 24 volt solenoid. Match it to the truck's electrical system and the coil already on the unit.

How do I know which output shaft my CS12 has?

Use the option letter on the tag. The shaft is chosen by letter: C, 2 and X share one shaft, E, Y and Z another, and I and P each have their own.

Should a clutch shift PTO be engaged under load?

No. Muncie's clutch shift owner's manual says not to engage under heavy load or above 1,200 rpm at the output shaft. See PTO troubleshooting if it will not engage.
