What the PowerClutch is

The PowerClutch is a clutch pack PTO that engages and releases on command rather than turning all the time. Inside the housing, a piston compresses a stack of eight friction discs and seven spacer discs, and an input gear on an idler shaft drives an output gear. Muncie builds the housing in a 6-bolt version and an 8-bolt version, and sells it with manual air, electric/air or electric/hydraulic shift systems in 12 or 24 volts.

The parts book (Rev. 11-00) separates units by build date code, with different rebuild kits for units built before and after December 1990.

Where it fits

Muncie's PowerClutch parts book does not list vehicles. Fit is set by the mounting (6-bolt or 8-bolt), the input gear code and the speed ratio. The gear data table covers C61, C70, F85, M65, S60, S70, U60 and U68 input gears, each with its own tooth count, and the mounting gasket list includes an Allison gasket for the U60 gear. Because a gear code and a transmission have to match, send us the transmission model, the PTO opening and the full tag.

Stud kits follow the mounting: 20MK7700 for the PC6S, 20MK8800 for the PC8S and 20MK6605 for the PC6S-F85. The mounting gaskets come in 0.010 and 0.020 inch thicknesses for both the 6-bolt and the 8-bolt housings.

Reading a PowerClutch model number

The order is design, mounting, gear data, speed ratio, shifter type, assembly arrangement, output type, special feature. Muncie's example is PC6S-U68 12-H1BP: PowerClutch, SAE 6-bolt, U68 gear (6/8 pitch, 20 degree), ratio 12 (1.20:1), 12 volt electric/hydraulic shift, arrangement 1, 1.25 inch round output, pressure line.

  • Shifter: A manual air, E 12 volt electric/air, F 24 volt electric/air, H 12 volt electric/hydraulic, J 24 volt electric/hydraulic.
  • Output: B 1.25 inch round, D SAE "B" direct mount, G special.
  • Special feature: X none, P pressure line, R pulse generator without pressure lube, S pulse generator with pressure lube.
  • Arrangement: 1 or 3.

Parts that wear and what to order

  • Rebuild kits by build date. The date code is on the inspection cover. PC-RBK-13 is for a spur gear unit built before 12/90, and PC-RBK-13-1 is for units built 12/90 and after. PC-GSK-13 is the gasket and seal kit for old and new units.
  • Output shaft and clutch pack assemblies (CCPK) for the 04, 05 and 07 ratios, in round shaft (B) and 7/8 inch 13T spline (D) versions, for units built 12/90 and after.
  • Shift system kits: 48M81200 (12 volt electric/air), 48M82400 (24 volt), 48M81210 (12 volt electric/hydraulic), 48M82410 (24 volt), 48M61251 and 48M62451 (manual air).
  • Input and output gears by designator from the gear data table.
  • Pulse generator kit 16TK3833, with the magnetic pickup, for units with that special feature.

Questions we get about the PowerClutch

Which rebuild kit do I need?

Read the build date code on the inspection cover. Before 12/90 on a spur gear unit it is PC-RBK-13; from 12/90 on it is PC-RBK-13-1.

Can I change the arrangement when I rebuild it?

Muncie's notice says the thrust bearings and thrust washers must go back in the right order and the shaft should be installed with the PTO held vertical, or the bearings and washers can end up misaligned. On an older unit with a roll pin holding the idler shaft, use a new roll pin.

What do the gear designators in the parts list mean?

The gear code plus the ratio. U6807, for example, is the U68 gear at ratio 07, and Muncie's table gives its tooth counts (24/22 input, 30 output) and part numbers. The model number guide explains tags in general.
